Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted and separated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis. It is a light yellow powder at room temperature and tastes bitter. It is insoluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, and soluble in hot acetic acid. It turns green when it meets ferric chloride and produces orange precipitate when it meets lead acetate. It turns yellow when dissolved in alkali and ammonia water, and soon turns black-brown.
Baicalin has significant biological activity, and has antibacterial, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-lowering, anti-thrombotic, asthma-relieving, fire-purging and detoxifying, hemostasis, pregnancy-soothing, anti-allergic and spasmolytic effects.
