4-Hydroxyisoleucine is extracted from fenugreek. Fenugreek is an annual herb, 20-80cm tall, and the whole plant has fragrance. The stem is upright, mostly tufted, and sparsely hairy. The trifoliate leaves are alternate; the leaflets are long ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 1-3.5cm long, 0.5-1.5cm wide, and sparsely hairy on both sides; the petioles are long, and the stipules are fused to the petioles. The flowers are sessile, 1-2 axillary; the calyx is tubular; the corolla is butterfly-shaped, white, gradually turning light yellow, with a slight purple base; there are 10 stamens, two bodies; the ovary is linear, the pods are slender, oblate, slightly curved, 6-11cm long, 0.5cm wide, with reticular veins and soft hairs, and a long beak at the tip. There are 10-20 seeds, brown, and fragrant. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from July to August.

The Function of 4-Hydroxyisoleucine

4-Hydroxyisoleucine is a new insulin secretion enhancer that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes. L-4-Hydroxyisoleucine is a non-protein amino acid found in plants of the genus Fenugreek. This amino acid is mainly found in fenugreek seeds, accounting for about 80% of the total free amino acid content in the seeds. Fenugreek (fenugreek, Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an annual herb of the genus Trigonella in the Leguminosae family, widely distributed in Asia, Europe and Africa. Fenugreek seeds are traditional Chinese medicinal materials, and their two main pharmacological effects are anti-diabetes and cholesterol-lowering. In recent years, literature has reported that (2S, 3R, 4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine isolated from fenugreek seeds can promote insulin secretion, and this promoting effect also explains the anti-diabetic activity of fenugreek seeds.
